One year ago today, I met my running partner, peanut butter loving soulmate, and best friend. Michelle Thomas and I were introduced to each other by The Gathering Place because we were both 20 somethings running our first marathons and raising money for them. We both had parents who had been touched by cancer and wanted to do something about it, preferably with our feet. We met up for lunch one day, talked about nothing except for running and food, and haven't looked back since.
Before Michelle came along, I hated running with people. I was a solo runner who used running only to get deeper into my own thoughts and I always felt like I was slowing people down on the rare occasion I had a running buddy. This girl has taught me so many things in the last year but probably the biggest has been that running with a buddy is actually pretty amazing and not only makes your runs go by quicker but also pushes you to run harder. She's also taught me to really love yoga. She's a yoga instructor herself so I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later. And I'm so glad it did. Because yoga has really done great things for both my mental health and for my running.
Yesterday, Michelle and I celebrated our 1 year Friend-a-versary weekend (which we didn't actually realize it was until today) in the best way possible. She joined me for 10 of the 18 miles I ran yesterday for my long run and then we went out to breakfast and binged on eggs and coffee talking about life and running (because I don't think this girl and I could ever run out of running things to talk about). We lucked out with probably the best running weather you could get and pushed each other to get up each and every hill in the Bedford Metroparks. It was so nice to be able to talk through 10 of my 18 miles rather than listening to the same playlist or podcast that are my long run go-to's.
I am so thankful that The Gathering Place introduced me to this girl last year. I know that if I never need someone to talk to or vent to or just sit in silence with, Michelle is my girl. She's not currently fundraising for anyone or in training yet (she'll be running Columbus in the fall of 2017 - maybe I'll be joining her?) but once she does, I will be sure to keep you all updated.
Until then, I'm looking forward to many more long runs, many more yoga sessions, and many more food dates with this girl.
