I'mmmm Baaaaaacccckkkk! Hello everyone! I know I took quite the hiatus from blogging since my first full marathon back in May of 2016 but I'm back at it in 2017 and I'm determined to make this year my best year yet. I'm running the 2017 Cleveland FULL Marathon again in May and yes, I'll be fundraising again and hitting up all of my closest friends, family, and even strangers for money. Last year, I raised over $4,000 for The Gathering Place, an organization that provides free services to cancer patients and their families, in honor of my mother who has lived with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer for the past 12+ years. This year, Miles for Mom is back in action and I'll be raising money to honor my mother once again and also a little bit for myself. The organization I chose to raise money for this time is Bright Pink, who works hard to educate young women in their 20's and 30's about Breast and Ovarian Cancer, the risks, and most importantly, about prevention.
I chose to raise money for Bright Pink because I am just as determined as they are to educate as many people as I can about Breast Cancer and Breast Cancer Prevention. My mother waited too long in between her annual mammograms and it cost her BIG. By the time they found the cancer, it had already spread to her lymph nodes and other parts of her body and she would never be cured.
I am a healthy, happy 25 year old and I am already concerned about my risks. Cancer runs deep in my family on both sides and while my mother tested negative for the BRCA gene, it seems like every year someone new in my family is being diagnosed with some form of cancer. That's why I'm taking my health into my own hands. I already have an appointment scheduled with a breast cancer family history specialist, I'm determined to eat healthier and more holistically, and I'm still doing my regular self exams. If I'm going to have cancer, I'm going to catch it early enough so that it can be treated and I'm going to do everything in my power to prevent it. Because take it from my mother, living with stage 4 Breast Cancer for 12 years... kind of sucks.
I encourage everyone (especially all my ladies in their 20's and 30's out there) to read more about Bright Pink, their programs and services and I of course, encourage you all to make a donation to my marathon fundraising page. My goal this year is to raise $5,000 because I obviously want to beat last year's fundraiser and because by raising $5,000, I will be helping Bright Pink to train 4 women's health care providers to give more comprehensive preventative care to 14,400 patients annually, empower 900 individuals to assess their risk for breast and ovarian cancer at AssessYourRisk.org, Fund 3 Brighten Up Educational Workshop for 100 people each at corporations, organizations, and other group settings, and cover the production and distribution of 2,600 educational materials to doctors offices nationwide. For $5,000, that's getting the crucial information to potentially over 18,200 people! Click here to donate to Bright Pink.
Now that training has started and I've officially launched my fundraising campaign, you can expect many more social media posts, blog posts, emails, and pleads for donations. Marathon training and fundraising is a journey for sure and I'm excited to get going on it and I hope that you all will join me!
And year 2 is just the beginning of Miles for Mom. I'm hoping to raise $30K by the time I'm 30 for different cancer organizations. This is a cause that I am so passionate about and will do everything in my power to make my life's work. Thank you to everyone who has already given me so much support the last two years!
