Hello! And Happy Valentine's Day! I thought today, a day dedicated to those who we love, would be the perfect day to kick off Miles for Mom, the fundraising campaign I've started in honor of the one and only Chris Backo, my incredible mother. For those of you who don't know, on May 15th, I'll be running my very first full marathon (I know I know I'm crazy) and I'll be doing all 26.2 miles for the amazing woman I have the honor of calling mom.
My mom is probably the most selfless person you will ever meet. She's had cancer for the last 12 years (over half of my own life) and she still never asks for anything from anyone. That's why, instead of raising this money directly for her because I know she'd never take it, I wanted to do a fundraiser for an organization that has really helped her throughout these past 12 years. The Gathering Place offers all kinds of programs and services for those who have cancer and for their caregivers completely free of charge. They offer free wigs to chemotherapy patients, support groups, a lending library tailored to items that would benefit those touched by cancer, massage therapy, nutrition and exercise classes, and so much more. The Gathering Place helped my mother stay so positive all these years and I know that this positivity is a big reason of why she is still with us.
So for the next three months leading up to my Marathon, I'll be posting blog posts, social media posts, and sending out e-newsletters detailing my story, my training, and dishing out some tidbits about cancer, The Gathering Place, and training for a marathon. I hope that this information will inspire enough people to donate anything they can to The Gathering Place. My fundraising goal is currently set at $3,500, which is the amount of money needed for The Gathering Place to provide a free retreat for cancer patients.
